Montessori Art Curriculum
Art - The Montessori Way
In Montessori the arts are integrated into the day, children may show their knowledge through a play or drama. In addition we teach the skills of the arts through particular lessons.
Our Approach to Art
We value the explanation of the arts from the the New Zealand curriculum. We have adapted the ideas from it to explain our philosophy.
Arts education (Music, Dance, Visual and Drama) explores, challenges, and celebrates who humans are. It embraces toi Māori, valuing the forms and practices of customary and contemporary Māori performing, musical, and visual arts.
Learning in, through, and about the arts develops empathy, imagination, senses, and feelings. By participating in the arts, students’ personal well-being is enhanced. As students express and interpret ideas within creative, aesthetic, and technological frameworks, their confidence to take risks is increased. Specialist study of different topics helps student develop understanding, appreciation and knowledge.
Arts education values children’s experiences and builds on these with increasing sophistication and complexity as their knowledge and skills develop.
- Students will develop skills in
- Understanding the arts in context,
- Developing practical knowledge in the arts,
- Developing ideas in the arts, and
- Communicating and interpreting in the arts.
Aspects of the arts are weaved into the day for example students my do an art project that relates to their geography study of Asia. Students may explore tone of voice through reading different grammar materials out loud. Whole class activities will also be used to teach aspects of the arts.
