      <image:caption>Plants and animals are an essential part of Montessori.  With this base, children become interested in studying the wide variety of life on Earth.   Children study the anatomy, physiology, and classification of living things using classroom resources such as books, card material, and charts. At first we look at one species and then compare it to another. Students may write a report or deliver a presentation about different species of animals or plants.   Through studying different life forms tamariki make connections between present-day life forms and their ancestors on the Timeline of Life. As conditions on Earth changed, organisms that were more complex evolved. In satisfying its needs, each creature created a place for another. For example, as insects evolved, so did flowering plants which created relationships which we still see. Children see the interaction of living and non-living things in relationship like how plants interact with te awa. The interdependence of all things in the universe is stressed, with people being the most powerful living thing, but also the most dependent. Integration of a Te Ao Māori world view is a vital part of this curriculum.</image:caption>

Through the Montessori Great Story about numbers we look at how numbers have originated and helped people across cultures and time, this helps tamariki see how maths applies to real life.   We look at: 1) numbers to ten, place value, and addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. 2) The memorisation of math facts. 3) Numbers and hierarchy, that is, how the numbers in the decimal system are related and grouped.   We make use of modern research about the importance of mixed-ability grouping and have opportunities for students to work together to solve a problem and be exposed to different ways of thinking. This encourages collaboration, respect, and the idea that everyone has something to contribute and that maths is not about knowing something instantly or being right or wrong.</image:title>

      <image:title>Who was Montessori? - Maria Montessori.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Maria Montessori was an Italian doctor and educator who built a type of education around the idea that children learn naturally At a young age she was confident student who was not willing to be limited by traditional expectations for women. When she was 13 she entered a male only school to prepare for a career in engineering. She changed her mind and decided to become a doctor instead. She wasn’t successful at first but studied more and was eventually admitted. She was one of the first female doctors in Italy. She developed an interest in education and attended classes to grow her knowledge. She was made one of the directors for a new school for special education teachers. She observed and experimented to learn which teaching methods worked best. Many of the children made unexpected gains in her method which included life skills and hands on materials that children could choose for themselves after they had had a lesson. For the rest of her life, Montessori continued to grow her knowledge of the best methods for education. She spoke, wrote and developed an educational programme. Through her efforts and the work of others, Montessori education spread worldwide. She campaigned forcefully on behalf of women’s rights including the need for more opportunities for women. Maria Montessori lived through two world wars. This helped form her view on peace education. While traveling and teaching in India in 1940, she was caught amongst hostilities between Italy and Great Britan and was forced to live there until the end of the war. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize six times and was a passionate advocate of peace.</image:caption>

Through a variety of traditional Montessori stories we look at how words and language have come about and their importance to our development as a community. We also discuss how different languages are constructed and how languages help convey culture, including our own, Te Reo Maori and NZSL.   Children learn to read through a phonetic-based approach and also have independent reading activities to develop reading fluency and skills.   The study of grammar in the Montessori classroom is unique. Children study the parts of speech in detail. What work does a pronoun do and how is it related to the verb? If its place is changed in the sentence, does the meaning remain the same? Each part of speech has a distinctive, colourful symbol. Children place these symbols above the words of a sentence or story. Later, they begin to analyse the style of different writers using the grammar symbols.</image:title>
