Maths
Mathematics is a human invention that is both a language and a tool. Through the Montessori Great Story about numbers we look at how numbers have originated and helped people across cultures and time, this helps tamariki see how maths applies to real life.
We look at:
1) numbers to ten, place value, and addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
2) The memorisation of math facts.
3) Numbers and hierarchy, that is, how the numbers in the decimal system are related and grouped.
We make use of modern research about the importance of mixed-ability grouping and have opportunities for students to work together to solve a problem and be exposed to different ways of thinking. This encourages collaboration, respect, and the idea that everyone has something to contribute and that maths is not about knowing something instantly or being right or wrong.
